NGBS Green Advisory Group

The NGBS Green Advisory Group provides support and guidance on the NGBS Green Certification program with the goal of opening new markets and recruiting new clients. The Advisory Group members bring diverse expertise, experiences, and connections from the building, appraisal, policy, and media realms.

Troy Johns

Troy Johns, Chairman, NGBS Green Advisory Group

As Founder of Urban Northwest Homes, the largest home builder in the Pacific Northwest, Troy Johns has been actively involved in the development, construction, and renovation of sustainable, healthy, highly energy-efficient homes in Clark County, Wash. for the last 20 years. Troy's company has established significant efficiencies among subcontractors in the region, allowing him to implement highly sustainable features for his homebuyers, while maintaining affordability. Believing that “green building” is just another way of saying smart and responsible building, Troy’s mission is to cut energy consumption in the homes he builds by 50% above Energy Star standards. He holds leadership positions with the BIA of Clark County, the BIA’s Green Building Council, and the BIA of Washington State. Troy also serves on Home Innovation’s Board of Directors.

Kyle Abney

Kyle Abney, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Kyle Abney, Principal of Abney + Abney Green Solutions, is an accredited NGBS Green Verifier, LEED® Accredited Professional (AP), and state-licensed General Contractor. Kyle has first-hand experience with all green building certifications for both commercial and residential construction in Florida. Prior to founding his own firm, Kyle worked for a large commercial contractor and later for his family’s construction business. He is a recognized speaker on the topic of sustainable development and has been cited in various publications, including the Palm Beach Post, Miami Herald, Orlando Sentinel and was featured on National Public Radio (NPR). Kyle is active in the Florida Green Building Coalition and US Green Building Council South Florida Chapter where he served as the organization’s president from 2008 to 2010.

Sandra Adomatis, SRA, LEED Green Associate, Adomatis Appraisal Service

Sandra Adomatis, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Sandra Adomatis, Principal at Adomatis Appraisal Service, is a real estate appraiser, instructor, author, and appraisal course developer. She authored “Residential Green Valuation Tools,” which was published by the Appraisal Institute in April 2014. Sandra spearheaded the development of the Appraisal Institute Residential and Commercial Green and Energy Efficient Addendums. Her valuation and green building knowledge is prized by many for consulting in the area of valuing energy efficiency and green building technology. Her consulting clients include builders, governmental agencies, utility companies, and energy organizations, and members of the national media often quote Sandra on high performance topics of valuation. She is a national speaker at events such as GreenBuild, IBS, EEBA, ACI, The White House Conference Center, and Appraisal Institute Conferences.

Susan Asmus

Susan Asmus, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Susan Asmus, NAHB Senior Vice President for Regulatory Affairs, directs NAHB’s regulatory advocacy programs for environmental, land development, construction safety and health, sustainability and green, and construction codes, standards, and technology issues. With over 25 years of experience in the industry, she leads a diverse staff in the development and implementation of strategies to influence public policy and regularly interacts with Cabinet Members, agency leadership, members of Congress, Hill staff, allies and foes while advocating for NAHB’s interests. She continues to expand NAHB’s participation and leadership in sustainability and green construction and its promotion of the NGBS, and has recently been asked to examine the role resiliency plays within the sustainability realm as well as across the industry.

Kat Benner

Kat Benner, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Kat Benner is the Director-Multifamily of US-EcoLogic/TexEnergy, a large firm providing NGBS Green verification and LEED for Homes rating services. With 15+ years of experience in sustainability and construction, and a dizzying array of environmental and energy certifications in both commercial and residential, combined with her degrees in Environmental Studies and Anthropology, Kat’s an adept leader and qualified expert in the green field. With a broad knowledge base across low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise building types, in both wood and concrete/steel construction across diverse climate zones and various regions of the country, Kat and her team provide energy modeling, environmental consulting, plan reviews, energy code and above-code inspections, an array of testing and analysis, research and much more.

Dave Cloutier

Dave Cloutier, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Dave Cloutier is Director of Renovations & Construction for Balfour Beatty Communities, the leading provider of military family housing in the United States. An accredited LEED AP BC&D professional with more than 28 years of experience in the construction and renovations industry, Dave has been directly involved in the unique planning, development, and execution of extensive renovations and construction efforts across 54 military installations with a focus on green practices. Dave has brought to fruition housing and community facilities that surpass existing environmental standards – providing high-quality, sustainable communities and supporting an environmentally responsible business design. Dave has an acute ability to find the best course of action to attain project goals while staying on time and within budget. Prior to Balfour Beatty Communities, Dave served in the United States Navy Seabees working on construction projects and Disaster Relief efforts worldwide. 

Matthew Cooper, Senior Vice President, PEG, LLC

Matthew Cooper, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Matthew Cooper is the Senior Vice President of PEG, LLC. His 25 years of expertise in the evaluation, design, and control of the built environment has helped to establish PEG as an industry leader and innovator; providing utility and municipal demand side control programs as well as code compliance inspections and new construction third-party program implementation. PEG currently operates in 28 states as licensed mechanical engineers, and is a RESNET Provider, BPI Accredited Contractor, USGBC LEED for Homes Provider, and has NGBS Green Verifiers on staff. PEG is a 2015, 2016, and 2017 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year, and a 2015 and 2016 NGBS Green Partner of Excellence..

Tim Ellis

Tim Ellis, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Tim Ellis is the Owner of T.W. Ellis LLC, a Maryland-based remodeling firm that specializes in green remodeling. Tim is responsible for estimating, designs, material takeoff, marketing and daily operations of the company. With over 20 years’ experience of proven experience in the industry ranging from lead carpenter, responsible for building the projects, to project management, to designing and estimating the projects. Tim is a LEED AP and Certified Master Green Professional and served as Vice-Chair of the Remodeling Task Force of the 2012 NGBS Development process. Tim started his career as a union carpenter apprentice. He completed is 4 year apprentice ship with the Baltimore Carpenters union and become a carpenter journeymen. 

Joe Gordon

Joseph Gordon, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Joe Gordon is a Certified Construction Reviewer (CCR), NGBS Green Verifier, HERS Rater, and specialist in scientific data collection. Joe was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Green4Green program in Delaware, which issues a rebate to the home buyer after settlement if the home is certified under the National Green Building Standard™ (NGBS). In 2013, Joe was awarded "Green Partner of Excellence" by Home Innovation Research Labs in recognition of his leadership, excellence, and innovation in promoting third-party certification to the NGBS. Joe is committed to fostering ideas and practices which promote the symbiotic relationship between Builder/Developers, regulators and home buyers while improving and protecting the natural world. Bill Greene

Bill Greene, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Bill Greene is a licensed Architect in the State of Texas with over 15 years of multifamily design and construction experience. He is currently the Senior Design Manager for Wood Partners Central Region. Wood Partners is leading the industry in green development. Recently, Wood Partners has committed that all of its new multifamily developments would meet National Green Building Standard™ (NGBS) whenever possible. Many of their communities also incorporate construction waste recycling, transit orientation and other techniques to reduce their environmental impact. 

Rick Herman

Rick Herman, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Rick Herman has been CEO of the Rochester Home Builders’ Association (RHBA) for 20 years. The RHBA was founded in 1934 and is one of the original eight associations that formed the National Association of Home Builders. Rick is dedicated to the real estate and residential building industries and serves on a number of not-for-profit boards and industry advisory boards. He has been active within a seven county area for all advocacy efforts of the association on a local, state, and national level.

Randy Lanou

Randy Lanou, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Randall Lanou founded BuildSense in 1999. He brings his design, building, and problem solving skills to bear at BuildSense, an architecture and construction company that transforms American building and fosters delightful, healthy, and sustainable living. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at North Carolina State University College of Design where he has taught architectural design studios and seminars since 1998. BuildSense built the first Builder’s Challenge home certified in North Carolina and the first home certified in North Carolina using the NAHB Guidelines. His projects are featured in local and national press, including News and Observer’s Home of the Month, Architectural Record, Fine Homebuilding, and HGTV’s Beyond The Box.

Tony Mancini

Tony Mancini, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Tony Mancini is the SGC Horizon Building Group Director-Principal and has launched numerous events and platforms for the residential and commercial construction industry. Prior to founding SGC Horizon, Tony spent 12 years at Reed Business Information in leadership roles within the residential and commercial markets, including group director for Reed Construction Media, and publisher of Professional Builder and Professional Remodeler. He began his career at CertainTeed Corporation and also served as associate publisher for Sweet’s International at McGraw-Hill.

Mary Moltzan

Mary Moltzan, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Mary Moltzan is a Principal at Charlan Brock & Associates in Maitland, FL. Mary has worked on a wide variety of residential projects from mid-rise garden apartment buildings to ocean front high-rise condominiums with parking garages. Mary has become proficient as a designer of a luxurious living experience at all market levels while solving the myriad of technical issues that always occur. She takes great care to meet client needs while complying with all the regulations and construction requirements. Mary graduated in 1990 with a Master of Architecture with a concentration in Urban Design and became a licensed Architect, went on to obtain her NCARB certificate in 2007 and became a LEED AP in 2008. 

Stuart Proffitt

Stuart Proffitt, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Stuart Proffitt is a Co-Founding Partner of Proffitt Dixon Partners, a multifamily investment and development firm. Proffitt Dixon has committed to getting all its communities NGBS Green Certified and, in fact, the company’s Peyton Stakes community in Nashville was home to the 100,000th NGBS Green certification! Since 2008, his company has closed transactions valued at over $518 million with an active development pipeline in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Stuart’s experience spans from the development of high-rise urban projects to suburban multifamily, apartment acquisitions, as well as value-add investments. Prior to forming Proffitt Dixon Partners, Stuart was VP of Mixed-Use Development at Pappas Properties in Charlotte, NC, and Director of Development for Champion Development Group in Los Angeles. Stuart graduated cum laude from North Carolina State University, and earned his MBA and Master of Real Estate Development from the University of Southern California.

Lisa Stephens

Lisa Stephens, NGBS Green Advisory Group

Lisa Stephens is a Regional Vice President with Pinnacle Housing Group and President of Saigebrook Development, LLC, a certified WBE and Texas HUB real estate development firm. Lisa is a LEED Green Associate and former board member of the Florida Green Building Coalition and the Florida Coalition of Affordable Housing Providers. During her tenure in the real estate industry, Lisa has worked throughout the southeast constructing new apartment homes, conducting extensive rehabilitations, and replacing functionally obsolete housing. In 2006, Ms. Stephens joined Pinnacle Housing Group, a nationally recognized affordable housing developer. In 2011 Ms. Stephens, along with her partners at Pinnacle, established construction and development offices focused on affordable, energy efficient housing in Texas.
