New Data from Annual Remodeling Survey Sheds Light on Changing Market

April 12, 2019

Data collection for our Annual Consumer Practices Survey is complete and we’re now compiling and publishing the initial findings. More than 110,000 U.S. and Canadian households participated this year, and provided highly detailed information on their remodeling activities and purchases in 30 different product categories for the last year.

Already, we’ve identified some interesting market insights in several categories from this year’s study; Kitchen and Bathroom Countertops in particular. While Granite is still most popular, Quartz is growing rapidly at the expense of all other countertop types except Marble. Quartz’s deep penetration in the Oregon and Washington kitchen remodel markets is remarkable – with greater than 40% share of all installations in those states – but it is still not reaching its potential in many of the Eastern Seaboard states (e.g., Delaware, Maryland, Georgia) with only about 10% share.

Kitchen Cabinets are another category where dramatic change was revealed in the 2019 survey. Painted Cabinets are growing quickly in popularity at the expense of Wood Finishes, and the simpler Flat Panel door style is growing at the expense of traditional and more ornate Raised Panel doors. Euro-style cabinet boxes, which do not have face frames, peaked at almost 40% of the market a few years ago but are now declining in favor of face-frame designs.

What Makes Home Innovation’s Consumer Practices Reports Better?

Our reports are far more than just summary tabulations of a national household remodeling survey. We employ a robust market demand modeling methodology that compiles volume and type of products and materials purchased. We report market demand for owner- and renter-occupied households by state, regional, and national totals. Our Consumer Practices Reports also distinguish between places of purchase, DIY vs. Pro installations, and many more important details.

We’re also providing more options than ever in data format. The large survey sample size allows data subscribers to get a very granular look into county, metro area, state, and regional markets for residential remodeling. This year, Consumer Practices Reports will be available in both tabular and database formats that give you more analysis options, including analysis via business analytics and mapping software.
