The Hits Keep Coming: 300,000 NGBS Green Certified Homes!

Home Innovation Research Labs Celebrates the Latest Milestone in its National Green Building Standard Certification Program

Today, Home Innovation Research Labs certified the 300,000th NGBS Green Certified home! The project that helped NGBS Green reach this point was Crescent Communities’ NOVEL River Oaks in Houston, Texas – a luxury apartment community featuring upscale retail, restaurants, and a premier location with tree-lined streets and proximity to many parts of its vibrant city. The NGBS Green Verifier on the project was Master Verifier Rachel Della Valle, of Southern Energy Management.

NGBS Green Certified NOVEL River Oaks in Houston, Texas, built by Crescent
Communities, includes the certification program’s 300,000th certified home.

Crescent Communities has been a long-time NGBS Green program partner, recognized as an NGBS Green Partner of Excellence multiple years, and currently requires NGBS Green Certification for all its projects. It’s a choice for both their business and their commitment to the environment that just makes sense, according to Lisa Richards, Director of Stewardship. “The National Green Building Standard supports our commitment to measure our impact and improve our building performance over time,” she said. “NGBS Green Certified residences offer increased value, comfort, and efficiency, aligning with our goal to build prosperous and healthy communities within the ecological limits of our planet.”

And NGBS Green is not just the certification of choice for Crescent Communities. It remains the green certification program of choice for the entire residential construction industry, as evidenced by its rapid and ongoing growth. With all the new options available under the 2020 NGBS, there has never been a better time to tap into the benefits of this certification program. Whatever type of home you build and wherever you build it, NGBS Green has a certification for it.

NGBS Green Certification Volume

This milestone is obviously significant for its sheer number, but also for how rapidly it was achieved and the context of the timing. It was just 7 months ago when we celebrated reaching 250,000 NGBS Green Certified homes; and, as with that last major milestone, most of that time has been under the shadow of a global pandemic and shortages of both lumber and labor in the construction industry. This truly speaks to the practicality and power of NGBS Green certification and the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) upon which it is based. It has created a rigorous yet affordable and flexible choice for third-party certification that allows builders of all types and sizes to provide comprehensively green homes to mainstream buyers across the country. And, with last year’s debut of the 2020 NGBS, the certification now extends to even more single-family, multifamily, and mixed-use builders and buildings of all sizes. For a glimpse at how much variety there is within the program, check out the case studies available on the NGBS Green Resources page.
