Home Innovation Contributes to New PEX Plumbing Design & Installation Guide
Published Tuesday, May 26, 2026
Home Innovation Research Labs is pleased to announce its collaboration on the newly released PEX Plumbing Distribution Systems Design and Installation Guide, Third Edition, published by the Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI).
Developed by PPI, the Plastic Pipe and Fittings Association (PPFA), and Home Innovation Research Labs, with support and technical input from the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) and the International Code Council (ICC), the newly updated guide provides comprehensive information for the design and installation of crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) hot- and cold-water plumbing distribution systems in residential, multifamily, and commercial buildings.
The third edition marks the first major update to the guide in more than a decade and reflects significant advancements in PEX plumbing technology, materials, and installation practices. Spanning 156 pages, the guide includes:
- Updates reflecting advancements in PEX tubing, manifolds, and fittings
- Expanded information on code acceptance for PEX plumbing systems
- New design recommendations and revised installation techniques
- A new chapter dedicated to water service line applications and installation guidance
- Additional illustrations and graphics to support field application and understanding
Home Innovation contributed technical expertise and industry collaboration to help ensure the guide reflects current practices and the evolving needs of the residential construction market.
“Many aspects of PEX plumbing systems have evolved,” said Lance MacNevin in PPI’s announcement of the publication. “With so much new information to share, as well as the knowledge learned from over thirty years of North American plumbing applications, PPI members felt it was time to do a total re-write of this guide.”
Originally introduced twenty years ago, the guide serves as a practical resource for designers, builders, contractors, code officials, and other industry professionals seeking best practices for PEX plumbing system design and installation.
Home Innovation is proud to support collaborative, science-based resources that help advance building performance, construction quality, and practical implementation across the housing industry.
The PEX Plumbing Distribution Systems Design and Installation Guide, Third Edition is available as a free download through PPI's website.
