What's New in the U.S. Remodeling Industry?
Keeping up-to-date is critical in order to capitalize on trends and avoid being stung when your product category takes an unexpected dive. Data from our 2016 Consumer Practices Survey shows some unexpected changes underway that you need to know.
A few examples include:
- The Do-It-Yourselfers segment of the remodeling market continues to decline. In 2015, the DIY segment ranged from 70% of all interior painting to 16% of roofing replacements.
- Kitchen ranges are back! Just three years ago, cooktop/wall oven combo popularity peaked capturing nearly half of all kitchen remodels. But the popularity of professional-style, free-standing ranges has been key in this trend reversal.
- Simplicity is returning to kitchen finishes. Wood-finished, flat panel cabinets are more popular than ever. In 2008, cabinets with a raised panel-in-frame style peaked with 63% and flat panel-in-frame was only 19%. The current study reveals flat panel doors growing to 34% and raised-panel cabinets falling to 46%.
- The vinyl window market continues to rebound in remodeling. After years of flat to declining market shares, vinyl windows have made a turnaround over the past few years.
This is just a glimpse of the interesting findings from our most recent Annual Consumer Practices Reports. The reports cover building products used in residential repair and remodeling, and can be paired with our Builder Practices Reports to give you a complete view of the residential construction market.
